Unhappy people stuck in the 9 to 5 grind and how to break free

Increasing numbers of people are fed up with the 9 to 5 grind and are looking for more fulfilling lives as business owners. Your Business Group explored why people are fed up and how they can find better lives.

BBC Goldman Sachs’ Story

A Goldman Sachs’ story in 2021 illustrated some of the reasons why people hate their corporate jobs. 95- hour weeks were leading to burnout and  a BBC ews story broke in March 2021 where 12 employees told the media:

1) About only having 5 hours sleep a night

2) Very bad treatment by bankers

3) Experiencing the detrimental effects on their mental and physical wellbeing

One even reported to the BBC that the conditions were ‘inhumane’.

Hating Your Job Is Not New!

In 2017 a Gallup poll reported that an incredible 85% of people hated their jobs and especially their boss. The conclusion drawn by Gallup was that the ‘baby boomer’ managers were not able to motivate and meet the needs of younger generations.

7 Reasons Why People Hate Their Jobs

Here are 7 common reasons why people hate their work:

Your Boss is Unpleasant

Working for someone you don’t like is a motivation killer. You dread getting up and going to work. Giving your time to a person who doesn’t value you is the absolute worst.

Difficult Colleagues

Being stuck with people you find challenging is grating. Running your own online business, means you can choose who you work with.

Cognitive Dissonance

This means a company's values do not align with your own  values. Therefore, you may find the work unethical and against your ideals.

Long Commute

The hours spent on a train, bus, underground, or stuck in traffic each week add up and Covid lockdowns changed the way we work. Do you really want to waste hours of your life each week travelling when you could run your own business from home or wherever you have wifi?

Feeling Trapped

Same old, same old, hardly any variation and little opportunity for growth can be soul destroying. Work can seem like a living hell if you are trapped in a workplace you simply hate.

Long hours, Low Pay

Having to work over 50 hours a week with poor reward for your sacrifice is not a recipe for happiness. The company is making big profits but you are struggling to pay your bills.

Bad Decisions From Above

Being affected by senior management decisions that negatively impact you and clients is a bitter pill to swallow. Why not become your own boss and make the decisions yourself instead of being told what to do?
